Description
Our Orchestra in Residence close the season with a flourish.
The first great thunderbolt to issue from Tchaikovsky’s pen and the best early realisation of his incredible potential, his shimmering fantasy overture careens between the tension of the clashing Montague and Capulet houses and the heart-breaking beauty of the protagonists’ love. The sum of the parts is pure magic.
From its grand opening arpeggios to tour-de-force finale, Grieg’s masterpiece is one of the most popular, and most recognisable, piano concertos ever written. Since for many people this piano concerto stands for Grieg, and Grieg stands for Norwegian music, we hear a Norwegian flavour throughout, especially in the spirited dance of the last movement.
Franck’s only symphony combines symphonic architecture with a French concern for colour and supple melodies. Having caused a sensation with his feats as a child prodigy, this piece dating from the late nineteenth century crowns the extraordinary creative metamorphosis of Franck’s maturity.
